HEAPS AND OTHER MONUMENTS
The branches, bundles, heaps, drops and other objects have appeared in my work for a long time. They can be interpreted as real things and as visualized energies. Removed from their normal context and translated into abstract forms, they become monuments of mental and emotional states.
The heap is my favorite character. I call it “heap” instead of “pile” or “Haufen” (German) because the sound of that word rises upwards – as does its shape. It can be a heap of money, a heap of shit or a heap of unsolved problems. Also, Mt. Fuji is a big heap. With its impressing shape and enormous size it became the most important figure of Japan. This form represents a dialectical principle. As an obstacle, it blocks the view. But if you make the effort to climb up, the contrary is the case: the horizon widens.
Äste, Bündel, Haufen und andere Objekte tauchen schon seit langem in meinen Arbeiten auf. Sie können als reale Dinge und als visualisierte Energien interpretiert werden. Aus ihrem normalen Kontext gelöst und in abstrakte Formen übersetzt, werden sie zu Monumenten mentaler und seelischer Zustände, die nicht übersehen werden wollen.
Der Haufen ist meine Lieblingsfigur. Ich nenne ihn „Heap“ statt „pile“ oder „Haufen“, weil der Klang dieses Wortes sich nach oben erhebt – genauso wie seine Gestalt. Es kann ein Haufen Geld, ein Haufen Scheiße oder ein Haufen ungelöster Probleme sein. Auch der Berg Fuji ist ein großer Haufen. Mit seiner beeindruckenden Form und enormen Größe wurde es zur bedeutendsten Figur Japans. Diese Form stellt ein dialektisches Prinzip dar. Als Hindernis versperrt es die Sicht. Aber wenn man sich die Mühe macht, hinaufzusteigen, ist das Gegenteil der Fall: Der Horizont weitet sich.
